A Greener, More Compassionate Australia?

The Federal election has come and gone, and history has indeed been made: Melbourne is now Green, and Parliament, for the first time in 70 years, is hung. While everybody's talking about which way the Independent MPs--Bob Katter, Rob Oakeshott, Andrew Wilkie and Tony Windsor--will jump, several other features of the election results stand out. One is the large informal vote. Another is the rise of The Greens.

DRIVE - (Australian Documentary)

Drive is the title of a new Australian documentary film which had its premiere screenings at the 2010 Melbourne International Film Festival. The film, directed and produced by Bronwyn Purvis and Telen Rodwell, examines the relationship between young men and their cars — a relationship which has sometimes tragic outcomes, both for the young men at the centre of the film, but also for their families and communities. Concentrating on the lives, and premature deaths, of young, car-obsessed men in rural and regional Tasmania, Drive brings home the impact of alcohol, drugs and speed on young men’s lives, in a way that leaves a powerful impression on the viewer.

Red eyes and scattered thoughts: it’s been almost 24 hours since I’ve had any sleep, I’ve been working on a project that needed completion, and I’ve almost hit the wall. It’s cold, it’s raining, and I’m wondering why I’m sitting outside a cafe just off Lygon Street, waiting for some wanna-be politician, when I should be at home getting some badly-needed shuteye, and perhaps dreaming of a holiday in a tropical paradise, some place far, far away…
